Parenting

A placeholder for "parenting" discussions (obviously). Since I'm not a parent, I'll defer to impdecers who are!

What do those parents think of this? One of the interviewees, Annette Mountford of the charity Family Links, thinks that a parent should never call a child 'naughty', as it's bad for the child's self-confidence.

In my house we try not to say that a child is naughty, but we will say that they are being naughty. In other words we try to condemn the behaviour, not the child. If a child is being naughty then it is understood they can also stop being naughty. If we say they are naughty it's harder to explain that this is behaviour that they can take control of.

That's the theory, anyway. In practise, and when a child has just taken a felt tip to a wall (despite being repeatedly told not to), we sometimes fall short of our ideals.
