Political Nasdaq - Election 2008?

I'm starting a thread that hopefully will run up to the next election. The idea is to track the rise and fall in the fortunes of the three main parties all the way up to election night.

Here's a report on the surprise byelection victory from the LibDems. Perhaps everybody has been a bit rash in writing them off!

LidDem Byelection win stuns Labour

Also, coincidently, here's a link to a news report that Labour is considering scrapping next years local election. Hmmm.

Council polls could be scrapped

Melanie Phillips (a Wembley fav) reflects on the LibDem win in Dunfermline. She draws some interesting conclusions about the result and what it might mean for Labour and the Tories.

Here is an update on the Ming LibDem Leadership win for the Political Nasdaq.

Ming wins Lib Dem Leadership

Personally, I think they've made the right choice - Ming might be old but so are 20% of the voters. Also, his positions on civil liberties & high green tax will appeal to disaffected labour voters (like me) and his free market and more moderate positions on higher taxation will appeal to Tory voters nervous about the new boy David Cameron.

Gordon Brown is very smartly distancing himself from the fallout from the self destruction of the rest of New Labour. He tends to be absent from Parliament whenever there is a Government scandal (increasingly often). Not only that but he has been quietly using his powers as Chancellor to effectively kill ID cards (too expensive, unworkable ... and a Blair idea), block the Police force mergers (expensive, unworkable, unpopular with Police officers ... and a Blair idea), and proposes to slash one in every dozen jobs at the European Commission (Brown is more of a Eurosceptic, the EU was more Blair's bag anyway). I've already posted my support of Brown on the free market and his restistance to joining the Euro and although I don't share his faith in state run public services my respect for him continues to grown.
